- Can I install flush mount gas caps with the Stretched Tank Shroud for my Road King?
- You can use the Harley-Davidson or Kuryakyn flush mount caps but it will require a custom installation of the caps and some modifications are involved. The flush cap/gauge are designed to "bottom out" on the bottom of the tank in order to close properly. However, the small amount of height added to the tank due to the tank shroud will make it difficult for the flush cap/gauge to bottom out in the bottom of the tank. In order to make the caps function properly, you will need to enable the caps to properly bottom out while still remaining flush with the top of the tank shroud. It is certainly not impossible and it can be done, but it requires an extensive amount of work. We would not recommend this project for a novice builder.
- I know that I can use the factory seat with your fenders. But which custom seats can I use with your rear fenders?
-
All custom seats will work with our Summit Fender Series.
If you are using one of our Fender Covers, the topic of custom seats is more detailed. The situation with most aftermarket custom solo seats is that the seat pans are designed to match specifically to the curvature of the stock fender. Because of this, these very specific seat pans do not always sit well against our wider custom fender covers. This problem is usually found on the aftermarket solos, but the two-up seats are generally okay. With this in mind, it is difficult to say whether or not you will have any trouble with your custom seat. Best case scenario: everything fits well. Worst case scenario: the bottom of your seat pan may need to be modified to fit the slightly wider fender cover.
If you are looking for a seat recommendation, we recommend using Harley-Davidson's Badlander seat for a 2-up seat and Harley-Davidson's Brawler seat for a solo seat. Both of these seats can be purchased through Harley-Davidson's Parts & Accessories catalog.
Feel free to contact us regarding any specific seat applications you may have and we can better advise you for your project.
- Do you offer your Stretched Tank Shroud for my Road King?
- Yes, we do make a Road King version of our popular Stretched Tank Shroud. The Road King version comes with the gas gauge and gas cap holes pre-cut to help streamline your installation process. If ordering online, please make sure to select the Road King option for your model year. If ordering over the phone, make sure your sales person knows you are working on a Road King and we will take care of the rest.
- Is your rear fender a Fender Cover or Replacement Fender?
-
We offer both a fender cover through our Fender Cover Series and a replacement fender through our Summit Fender Series.
Our Fender Cover Series is designed to be used as a fender that mounts over the top of your stock fender and covers the bike's frame rails, hence Fender Cover. This is a very popular option, it is easy to install, and it is the fender which you will see on most of our custom bikes. You can also convert our Fender Covers for the Touring models to a replacement fender by combining the Fender Cover with our Fender Eliminator Kit. Our Fender Eliminator Kit is basically a subframe kit that installs in place of your stock fender. Once the Fender Eliminator Kit is installed, your new Fender Cover will mount directly to our Fender Eliminator Kit. Ultimately this will give you a style that still covers the bike's frame rails while allowing you to completely replace your stock fender. We also offer our Summit Fender Series which is very popular. The Summit Fender is a full replacement fender which installs between the bike's frame rails to leave the rails and chrome strut covers exposed. This replacement fender installs in place of your stock fender. We offer our Summit Fenders for 1997-current Touring models and 1986-current Softail models.
- What do I get when purchasing one of your Flush Mount Rear Fenders or Flush Mount Stretched Saddlebags?
- Our flush mounted parts are some of the most premium and custom parts available in the industry today. Your new flush mounted parts will arrive with everything pre-drilled and pre-fit, all lights flush mounted, all bodywork complete, and the parts will be in a final primer and ready to go to paint. The Stretched Saddlebags are already pre-drilled and pre-fit to reuse your stock saddlebag lids and hardware so the bags will be a direct swap for the stock saddlebags. The rear fender already has each of the mounting holes pre-drilled as well so there is no drilling for you to do. If you also purchase one of our wiring harnesses, we will pre-wire the taillights into one of our plug-n-play wiring harnesses which will serve as a direct plug-in for your stock wiring harness. Our custom harness also features a load equalizer for the LEDs and quick disconnect clips for the saddlebag lights.
- Do I need any other brackets for installing your front fenders?
- Our custom front fenders include the correct mounting spacers for your application so you do not need to purchase any additional mounting brackets. You may need to use longer bolts for securing the fender to the motorcycles fork legs depending on your application.
- Can I keep my detachable backrest or sissy bar with your fender?
-
Yes, our custom rear fenders allow you to retain your detachable backrest and sissy bar. Please see the information below for your specific application.
Summit Fender Series. All of our Summit Fenders will support your detachable accessories, including your backrest, sissy bar, luggage rack, and Tour Pack. You will simply use your original detachable docking hardware and you will not need to purchase any additional mounting hardware for this project.
Fender Cover Series. You can keep your detachable backrest or sissy bar with our Touring Fender Covers if you add our Backrest Relocation Kit to your order.
You can find our Backrest Relocation Kit here: Click for Backrest Kit
Our Fender Covers will also support some of the detachable luggage racks for the 1997-2008 models. Our 2009+ Fender Covers will not support a luggage rack. You can also use a detachable Tour Pack with our Fender Covers if you use one of our Tour Pack Racks which are designed to fit the dimensions of our custom fenders.
- Is ground clearance an issue with your parts?
-
The majority of our customers who daily-ride their bikes do not have any trouble with ground clearance. Our experience has been that a customer's riding style is the biggest factor for ground clearance and we have found that a rider's floorboards are the best way to determine if ground clearance will be an issue for you. If you do not scrape your floorboards frequently (example: several times each week), then our standard 4" stretched bags and fenders should be a great fit for you.
If you do scrape your bike's floorboards regularly, then you may want to consider our 2" Saddlebag Extensions as an alternative. We can also custom make a complimentary version of most of our fenders to match our 2" Extensions for you.
- Why would I use your Fender Eliminator Kit?
- Our Touring Fender Cover Series is designed to mount over the top of your stock fender and cover the bike's rails. Customers using our Fender Covers with custom taillights and customers who do not want to potentially harm the stock fender underneath the Fender Cover can use our Fender Eliminator Kit in order to protect the condition of their stock fender. The Fender Eliminator Kit is used to completely remove the stock fender from the motorcycle. This ultimately allows the Fender Cover to be used as a full replacement fender because it eliminates the stock fender from the bike.
- Can I use a detachable fairing of windshield with Bad Dad's Stretched Nacelle?
- Yes, you can adapt a detachable fairing or detachable windshield to fit with our Stretched Nacelle. The only area you will want to watch are the two accent spots on the sides of the nacelle. Since this area of our Stretched Nacelle is longer than the stock nacelle, the accents are also proportionally longer to mimic the body line of the stock nacelle. You will want to make sure that these two body lines do not interfere with the inside of your new fairing or windshield. You will want to test fit the new fairing prior to painting it. If the spots do interfere, you can slightly sand the inside of the fairing to make the clearance that you need. We have done this several times in the past with good results.
- Can I keep my detachable Tour Pack with your Touring Fender Cover?
-
Yes, you can keep your Tour Pack. You will want to use our custom Tour Pack rack in order to accommodate the Tour Pack with our Fender Covers. You can find that link here.
If you currently have a fixed mounted Tour Pack (like on an Ultra model), you will also need to convert to our detachable style Tour Pack mount.
If you want to keep your existing hardware setup without the need to change any of the hardware components, you will want to use our Summit Fender Series because it will accommodate your existing Tour Pack setup without the need for any additional hardware or modifications.
- How do I install your parts?
- You can find instructions for installing most of our parts here: Click for instructions
- Softail
-
- Will you pre-cut exhaust holes into Softail parts?
- We are not able to pre-cut Softail fenders for exhaust holes due to the vast number of pipe options available for the Softail models. The Touring models are more standardized so making exhaust cuts is more straightforward. However, the Softail models can be any wide number of configurations so we prefer to leave these uncut.
If you do scrape your bike's floorboards regularly, then you may want to consider our 2" Saddlebag Extensions as an alternative. We can also custom make a complimentary version of most of our fenders to match our 2" Extensions for you.
- Can I keep my detachable backrest or sissy bar with your fender?
-
Some of our custom rear fenders allow you to retain your detachable backrest or sissy bar. Please see the information below for your specific application.
Summit Fender Series. All of our Summit Fenders will support your detachable accessories, including your backrest, sissy bar, and luggage rack. You will simply use your original detachable docking hardware and you will not need to purchase any additional mounting hardware for this.
Fender Cover. Our Softail Fender Covers install over the Softail's frame rails and struts. As you probably know, the standard backrests and sissy bars for the Softails use a pair of detachable side plates that mount to the struts, and then the actual backrest or sissy bar slides into these side plates. In order to fit the backrest, the detachable side plates will first need to be fit to the bike and then the custom fender will be installed over the side plates. Once the fender is installed, you will want to cut a small hole in the top of the fender to allow access to the side plates. This will allow your backrest or sissy bar to slide through the fender and into the side plates. If these modifications are a concern for you, we recommend using our Summit Fender for your application.
- I know that I can use the factory seat with your fenders. But which custom seats can I use with your rear fenders?

However, the Road Star models can be any wide number of configurations so we prefer to leave these uncut.

-
- Will the nacelle fit any of the Softail models?
- Yes, we also offer a version of our Stretched Nacelle for the FL-style Softail models (Deluxe, Heritage, Fatboy). If your bike already has a Harley-Davidson nacelle, then our Stretched Nacelle will bolt-on in place of your current nacelle and it will fit with your existing headlamp, trim ring, etc. If your FL Softail does not currently have a Harley-Davidson nacelle, then you will also want to purchase the 7” headlamp assembly used on the Touring models.
- Do I need to buy the stretched spear when purchasing the nacelle?
- Our Stretched Nacelle Spear is a custom accent piece which we offer for the Road King Stretched Headlight Nacelle. Our spear is a stretched version of the original Harley-Davidson spear which we have cast from aluminum. This accent piece is an optional accessory and it is not required for installing the Stretched Nacelle. When using our nacelle, you have the option to use our Stretched Spear, reuse your original spear, or use no spear at all.

Because it is a one-piece design, you will want to remove your handlebars from the bike and then the custom nacelle can be slid into place. - Saddlebag Extensions
-
- How do you suggest installing your Saddlebag Extensions?
- You can find instructions for installing our Saddlebag Extensions here: Click for instructions
- Are Bad Dad's extensions compatible with ABS plastic saddlebags?
- Yes, our fiberglass Saddlebag Extensions are compatible with Harley-Davidson’s ABS saddlebags. We have actually installed our Saddlebag Extensions onto more ABS bags than non-ABS bags. You will have great success installing the extensions if you follow the procedures and use the materials we recommend in our instructions for installation.
- Can I lower my bike after I have extended my saddlebags?
-
Yes, many of our customers lower their bikes between 1" and 2" after extending their saddlebags. Depending on your model and model year, your stock saddlebags will likely have 13" to 14" of ground clearance. Extending the bags by 4" will change your ground clearance to 9" or 10" depending on the bike model and year. Our experience has been that this is still plenty of clearance for customers to lower their bike further.
If you would still like to lower your bike further, adjustable lowering kits such as our Slammed Lowering Blocks are a great way to incrementally lower your ride height while checking for ground clearance.
- How much of a gap should I leave between my pipes and exhaust holes?
- We recommend a gap of 1/8” to 1/4”. We find that gaps of this range offer the best compromise of aesthetics and usability. A tighter gap provides a better look for your custom project while a wider gap allows some margin for movement of your exhaust pipes and saddlebags. For this reason, we find that 1/8” to 1/4” gaps are the best. You should be able to reliably hit these gaps with any of our products.
- Front Fenders
-
- Do I need any other brackets for installing your front fenders?
- Our custom front fenders include the correct mounting spacers for your application so you do not need to purchase any additional mounting brackets. You may need to use longer bolts for securing the fender to the motorcycles fork legs depending on your application.
- Stretched Tank Shrouds
-
- Do you offer your Stretched Tank Shroud for my Road King?
- Yes, we do make a Road King version of our popular Stretched Tank Shroud. The Road King version comes with the gas gauge and gas cap holes pre-cut to help streamline your installation process. If ordering online, please make sure to select the Road King option for your model year. If ordering over the phone, make sure your sales person knows you are working on a Road King and we will take care of the rest.
- The Strength of Fiberglass
-
- What's the difference between fiberglass and other composite materials?
-
Bad Dad chooses fiberglass and injected fiberglass for all of our parts production because it is the most researched, most tested, and most reliable method for parts production available today. Fiberglass has numerous benefits over other compounds such as ABS and PPO. Most specifically, fiberglass products are easier to modify for a custom project (like custom exhaust openings) and also easier to repair. Additionally, most painters are more experienced using fiberglass composites and will therefore achieve better results painting a fiberglass part.
The key to a good fiberglass part is in the quality and thoroughness of its construction. While there are a lot of poor fiberglass parts available in the market, a properly constructed fiberglass part will meet and exceed your expectations. Fiberglass is actually stronger than steel in pound-for-pound comparisons and we have had fenders performance tested to withstand over 2,000lbs. of force. Furthermore, fiberglass is the material of choice for cigarette boats and other high performance body components due to the strength, reliability, and versatility of fiberglass.
Bad Dad and our customers have had wonderful success with all of our fiberglass products. We are extremely proud of the quality of all of our parts and we know that you will be too! All of our quality fiberglass components are designed, built, and tested in the Midwest of the United States.
